The third of this year’s four World Marathon Majors took place today and Gillian Jago was there on the start-line in the blue and white, representing the mighty Eccleshill Road Runners. Gill joined a Stellar field of over 50,000 runners from all over the world along with over a million spectators. In unseasonably humid conditions, the 51st staging of this event saw local and international elites take to the start-line to fight for the crown of 2022 Champion. The 26.2 mile course takes runners through the five boroughs of New York City, beginning on Staten Island and finishing at the Tavern on the Green in the Big Apple’s famous Central Park. First Hosted in 1970 with just 170 competitors, the 2019 edition saw 53,627 elite and amateur runners cross the finish line, a number that dipped due to covid-19 restrictions. This year once again saw over 50,000 starters including a star-studded lineup of elites in both the men’s and women’s categories. following a dark and dismal 5 am start line arrival the weather took an unprecedented turn during the race and temperatures rose to an incredible 23 degrees at times with high humidity making for extremely tough conditions for running. Gill battled on through, enjoying all that the NYC marathon has to offer despite the challenge and she finished the race after an amazing, if really long day, still smiling and sporting the Union Jack in a fantastic time of 4:48:27 – awarded a huge medal for her efforts she now has a few days in New York to enjoy all that the buzzing city has to offer! Well done Gill, star number 4 is well and truly in the bag!
