Gillian Jago isn’t taking any prisoners when it comes to race strategy. Seeing out the old and welcoming in the New Year with back to back marathons in Liverpool (One yesterday one today) The return of the New Years Eve and New Years Day Liverbird Double marathon saw runners start by the River Mersey for this unique race. The marathon course follows the River Mersey for 3 miles before returning to the start point and repeating the lap a further 3 times (4 in total) to complete the route. This double is ideal for both the seasoned marathon runner and those new to the sport looking for a personal best on the distance and also a great introduction into back to back long distance running suitable for ultra runners. This was a measured course with a UKA/Trail Running Association permit. The race is hosted by GB Ultras who specialise in supported events covering 50, 100 & 215 Mile Ultra Marathons. Gillian has now tested the waters for upping the distances on her race radar that being an ultra marathon! Both days saw runners complete the races in, at ties, torrential rain. This caused a build up of mud at the turn around point making for tough going. This was mitigated by camaraderie and support amongst the runners and supporters with words of encouragement for each other whenever and wherever they could. Gillian’s results were: New year’s eve marathon 4:20:17; followed by her New Year’s day marathon in 4:51:42. Absolutely amazing effort Gill, well done and best of luck as you step up for your next challenge! HAPPY NEW YEAR!
