Eccleshill’s Simon Lacy this weekend chose the Split Marathon which is the biggest of the road running events held annually on the Dalmatian coast in the southern part of Croatia. Set in Split, the second-largest city in the country with a population of about 160,000. This unique running festival starts on the lively Riva promenade in the city centre, and all tracks lead through the most beautiful parts of the city. Both routes (Marathon & Half) feature an out-and-back run along ulica Domovinskog rata (a six-lane arterial road), one lap on the athletics track of Stadion Poljud (the home stadium of the Hajduk Split football club), and a beautiful run around the densely-wooded Marjan hill. There are 5 races to choose from: a full marathon, a marathon relay, a half marathon, 10 km and 5 km race. Something for everyone!!! Billed as not being an easy to run 42 or 21 km, but definitely easier if you are running in surroundings that will inspire you. The number of cultural monuments of city 1700 years old, Mediterranean ambience and sports heritage of “The most beautiful city in the World” is how its habitants are describe it, these are more than enough reasons to run the event! Simon finished the marathon in 4:59:23 Well done!!
