The London Marathon on Sunday, 21 April this year saw the 45th edition of the race – ever popular with more than 53,000 runners tackling and finishing the 26.2 miles. Some wanted to break world records others will running in fancy dress, but each ad every on were cheered on by the crowds while raising millions of pounds for charity. This year Martin Steele was the only Eccleshill representative, gaining his place in the club’s ballot back in November, Martin’s goal was to train well, run well and finish without injury, if he could break the 5 hour mark to improve on his previous London attempts that would be the icing on the cake.

The London Marathon first took place in 1981 and has become one of the most popular marathons in the world, places are so sought after that they have become like ‘gold dust’! The route takes in many of London’s famous landmarks including Buckingham Palace, The Cutty Sark, Tower Bridge and Canary Wharf, Big Ben, Embankment, and of course that prestigious run down The Mall to the finish. Without doubt it is the most popular marathon on the planet and a reported more than one million people have completed the event since its first edition. The entire course, was lined with spectators, cheering participants on every step of the way, coupled with absolutely perfect, if a little chilly, conditions on the day contributing to a unique atmosphere and unforgettable experience for many.

Martin got his wish and romped home in 4:52:35, tired but still smiling, well done Martin, a very well earned 45th edition medal in the bag!

p.s. Entry for next year’s race is now open for a limited time if you have even the slightest desire to take on the distance this is the ballot to be in! (Martin has already entered!)
