Described as ‘unusual’ the Coniston 14’s hilly route follows 13.875 miles of road that circles Coniston water with stunning views of the surrounding mountains, quite rightly billed as probably the most beautiful road race in Britain. First run in 1982, the race has since become a popular Spring event in the village Calendar. Organised by an enthusiastic committee of volunteers from Coniston village, each year it attracts some 1600 runners which is why it has earned the reputation of being one of the best organised small races in the country! The race starts and ends at John Ruskin school and Playing field. As a tribute to a founder member John Kirkbride, who died of cancer, a significant donation is made annually to St Mary’s Hospice Ulverston as well as donations to around 30 other local charities. Murky grey conditions greeted runners for this years race and soon turned into heavy rain, we know, that’s why it’s the ‘Lake District’! Three Eccleshill Road Runners travelled to the beautiful village in Furness, Cumbria to take on the challenge. Sarah Myers is in the midst of marathon training and earning valuable miles in the bank. Back for another dose of beautiful scenery was David Goodyear, whilst sister Annie Kisluk was sidelined after a fall earned her some stitches in her knee during the midweek club run, here’s wishing her a speedy recovery. Results were: David 2:42:43 and Sarah 2:45:49, well done!
