Hosted by Run For All, the Leeds 10K was Jane Tomlinson’s vision. Having raised £1.8 million for charity while she was battling terminal cancer, in 2006 Jane knew her time left to fundraise was limited. As a result, she decided to set up the Leeds 10K to continue the fundraising vehicle for charities that she had started. Over the last 15 years the Leeds 10K has grown to become one of the highlights of the city’s events calendar, and is a hugely popular, inclusive and supported race for participants of all abilities. In many ways, the Leeds 10K captures the can-do, inspirational spirit of its founder. Converging in Millennium Square, runners were met with pleasant, cool conditions, a pleasant morning for a run, however, at around the half way point the weather had better ideas, the sun appeared and increased the heat by quite a few degrees! There were, though, records smashed as the men’s record was smashed in a blistering 29:01 and the ladies a staggering 33:41. Throughout the route that takes in many of the city’s historic landmarks, crowds came out in force. A fantastic atmosphere and friendly volunteers make the event an unforgettable ‘one for all’ year on year. Eccleshill had two participants out on the course this year, making a welcome first outing as an Eccleshill runner was Laura Hammond who finished in a brilliant time of 66:33 and Jonathan Tansley, who was pleasantly surprised by his time 57:24 as his sights were set on finishing between an hour and 1:15! Well done!
